Rocco Mediate assisting with renovation of greens at Greensburg Country Club

November 12, 2018

Rocco Mediate is getting back to his golf roots by collaborating with course architect James Cervone to renovate some of the greens at Greensburg Country Club, the course on which Mediate learned the game.

According to golfcoursearchitecture.com, Mediate, a Greensburg native and Hempfield graduate, will work alongside Cervone, who has been operating with the club for 13 years. He developed a bunker refurbishment project in 2007 and it was completed two years later.

The site reports that Mediate, 55, now one of the more popular players on the Champions Tour, began talks with Cervone in 2009 but initial talks remained just that for years. A plan of action did not gain steam until recently.

Cervone, a Murrysville resident who has a degree from Penn State, oversaw a major renovation to Sewickley Heights Golf Club last year.

He used to work for Ault & Clark Design, who designed Birdsfoot Golf Club near Freeport.

Greensburg Country Club contacted Cervone last year and the project took flight.

Cervone said Mediate is a fan of “classic courses,” a label which befits Greensburg, and has “an amazing memory of course features and overall details.”

The club opened in 1904.

“It is the perfect project for us,” Cervone told the site. “Especially with Rocco’s true connection to the course and this area.”

The site reported Cervone reviewed greens on holes 6, 15 and 16 on the par-70 layout to consider replacing turf there and adding new pin positions. Clearing trees on No. 5 also was discussed with GCC management to “bring the hole back to what (Mediate) remembered growing up.”

The green on the short, par-4 16th, the site said, already has been completed.

“I couldn’t be happier and prouder than to be a part of the restoration at Greensburg,” Mediate told the site. “It’s where I learned the game and I want to bring it back to what it was in the old days and with Jimmy’s help and guidance that’s just what will happen.”

Mediate won six times on the PGA Tour and has three victories on the senior circuit.
