PARADISE, Calif. (AP) — Sheriff’s investigators have begun the grim task of identifying the dead from a massive Northern California fire that became the third-deadliest on record in the state. Sheriff Kory Honea says 23 have died. The victims have not been identified, but the department has a roster of 110 people believed missing. Honea says the agency is bringing in a mobile DNA lab. Meanwhile, fire officials worried about dangerous winds expected to kick up through Monday.

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — Southern Californians battered by the wildfires got to take a breath Saturday and take store of what the wildfires did to them. A lull in fierce winds that drove a pair of destructive fires allowed firefighters to make their first real progress in stopping the blazes. But a sustained stretch of vicious winds, and the strong possibility of a new round of troubles, were set to start Sunday.

CHICO, Calif. (AP) — The fire that leveled a Northern California town roared in so fast that for the first 24 hours, there was no firefight at all — just rescues. Cal Fire Butte County Unit Chief Darren Read choked up as he told fire crews Saturday that they got their “butts kicked” during Thursday’s initial fire run. He thanked them for saving the lives of thousands of people. Thor Shirley described pulling people out of houses and from the side of the road into the fire truck.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Elections workers around Florida on Sunday have begun the massive task of recounting ballots in the U.S. Senate and governor races after the secretary of state ordered a new review. Miami-Dade County on Saturday evening started feeding ballots into scanning machines.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Authorities now say they’ve confirmed their belief that the gunman who killed 12 at a Southern California bar also took his own life. The confirmation comes from and autopsy on the body of Ian David Long, who shot and killed 11 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill along with a police officer who responded just before midnight Wednesday. Police said the officer exchanged gunfire with Long, a 28-year-old ex-Marine machine-gunner. Long was found dead at the scene.
