NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a 7-year-old girl and other occupants of a Massachusetts home were relocated due to what police described as "deplorable" and unsanitary living conditions.

An anonymous tip from the state's child abuse hotline led Newburyport police to the home on Sunday to conduct a welfare check.

Police say the kitchen counters were covered with trash and the floors were covered in dirty clothes, trash and animal feces. They say it was difficult to get to each room.

Newburyport police Sgt. Matthew Simons told the Newburyport Daily News that he called the city's health inspector, who gave him the authorization to condemn the building.

Police have not decided if they will charge two family members for allowing the girl and another elderly woman to live there.
