James Dean Stamp On Sale on ‘East of Eden’ Movie Lot

June 25, 1996

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) _ A postage stamp commemorating James Dean went on sale Monday on a studio lot where the actor filmed scenes from the only three movies he made.

A billboard-size replica of the stamp was unveiled overlooking a town square and buildings that provided backdrop for ``East of Eden,″ ``Rebel Without a Cause″ and ``Giant.″

A crowd of 2,000 gathered for the ceremony, including hundreds who stood in line under a hot summer sun to buy stamps, posters and other souvenirs.

``I was only 16 when he died. He was one of my heroes. That’s why I’m here,″ said Faith Seyforth of North Hollywood. ``Nobody’s matched him yet.″

The stamp bearing Dean’s brooding image went on sale on the studio lot, at the Burbank post office and at 127 Warner Bros. retail outlets. It was to go on sale at post offices nationwide on Tuesday.

It is the second issuance in the ``Legends of Hollywood″ series of commemorative stamps. A Marilyn Monroe stamp was the best-selling postage stamp of 1995, with 46.3 million likenesses of the blonde bombshell sold.

But Elvis is still the stamp king: The 1993 Presley imprints had sold a record 124 million stamps by the end of 1995.
