Police: Mother charged in ‘near-fatal’ infant drug exposure
LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. (AP) — A mother has been charged following what state police say was her infant’s exposure to “a near-fatal dose” of fentanyl last fall.
Emergency responders were called Nov. 13 to a North Union Township home in Fayette County and found a 3-month-old girl having difficulty breathing. She was believed to have been exposed to an opioid and was flown to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for treatment.
State police allege that 27-year-old Crystal Cumberland of Uniontown acknowledged to hospital staff “snorting a white powder to get high.” They allege that she did so near the child, exposing the infant to fentanyl sold as heroin.
Cumberland is charged with aggravated assault, child endangerment and reckless endangerment. Court documents don’t list a defense attorney and a listed number for her couldn’t be found Friday.
