Del Monte Will Help Develop Banana Plantations
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Del Monte Tropical Fruit Co. announced Wednesday it has agreed to help develop 3,000 acres of new banana plantations in the West African republic of Cameroon.
The 10-year pact made this month with the state-owned Cameroon Development Corp. will start work immediately to set up the plantations near the port city of Doula, the announcement said.
Already a producer of cocoa, coffee and peanuts, Cameroon will receive technical assistance from Del Monte to produce top-quality bananas. Fresh bananas will be marketed in France and other European countries under the Del Monte label.
″The heightened production of 100 million pounds of bananas in Cameroon should boost the nation’s economy, provide export earnings and give Del Monte an increased presence in the European market,″ said Paul J. Bott, president and chief executive officer of Del Monte Tropical Fruit, a unit of RJR Nabisco.
The Coral Gables-based Del Monte Tropical Fruit is a worldwide producer and marketer of fresh bananas, pineapple and papaya.
