No. 21 Creighton 79, Long Beach St. 66

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Kathy Halligan’s 19 points from long range and Kris Kugel’s 27 points from close in powered No. 21 Creighton past Long Beach State 79-66 in the first round of the women’s NCAA West Regional on Wednesday night.

Creighton, the Western Athletic Conference champion making its first NCAA appearance, will take a 28-3 record into Sunday’s second round at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, the second seeded team in the West Regional.

Long Beach State (21-10), has been in all 11 NCAA tournaments. This was the 49er’s first loss in five first-round games. Long Beach also had received six first-round byes.

Creighton, with a 27-game home winning streak, used a 17-4 run in the first half to move up 21-15 midway through the half. Kugel had eight of those points.

The Lady Jays led 39-28 at halftime.

Danielle Scott’s two baskets early in the second half pulled the 49ers within five points but Halligan and Kugel went on a 13-2 run that built a 16- point lead.

Long Beach never closed than 10 points thereafter.

Trise Jackson had 34 points in the losing cause and Scott added 13. Becky Strathman and Mindy Hendrickson added 11 each for Creighton.
