Last Burford Aide Resigns
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Joseph A. Cannon, the only close associate of Anne Burford kept on at the Environmental Protection Agency after she left, has resigned to practice law, the agency announced Tuesday.
Cannon had been assistant administrator for air and radiation programs under William D. Ruckelshaus, who resigned as administrator on Jan. 5.
Under Mrs. Burford, Cannon was associate administrator for policy and resource management for two years.
Ruckelshaus, whose housecleaning of the agency’s depleted top ranks was otherwise total when he replaced the embattled Mrs. Burford in May 1983, once described Cannon as ″the kind of fellow who works so hard that he wouldn’t know his coat was on fire unless you told him.″
