CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ Chris Eilers (6-3), pitching through a painful elbow injury, pitched a three-hitter for his seventh complete game and helped eliminate Navy (34-20).

Dax Norris had three hits and two RBIs on Friday, including a third-inning single that brought in Alabama’s first run. Pinch-hitter Alan Hill hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

Alabama (40-22) plays the loser of the Richmond-Winthrop game.

Kyle Murray (8-5), who won his previous six decision, was the loser.

Clemson 11, Jacksonville 5

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ Jason Dawsey (11-3), who stomped around the mound after the Tigers (41-22) fell behind 4-0 in the third, allowed five runs and 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings. Jeff Sauve finished for his first save.

Jacksonville (41-22) lost its fourth straight and was eliminated. The Dolphins have lost eight of 11 NCAA games in four appearances since 1989.

Clemson plays Winthrop or Richmond on Saturday.

Seth Brizek had a two-run homer and David Miller drove in three runs during Clemson’s rally. The Tigers got 11 runs and 15 hits in their final five times up after managing a single in the first three innings.

Eddie Sordo (10-4) gave up five runs and five hits and was the loser.


Pitt 12, Citadel 10

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Pittsburgh built a 10-run lead and hung on to eliminate The Citadel 12-10 Friday in the NCAA Mideast Regional.

The Panthers (38-15) scored four times in the first and fourth innings to build a 12-2 lead. They will play California, 15-4 losers to Oklahoma State.

The Bulldogs (39-21) closed to 12-4 on a two-run homer by Curt Beerman in the eighth. The first seven batters reached in the ninth, with six scoring.

The Citadel put runners at first and third with no outs. Tedde Campbell, who started and pitched 7 1-3 innings in Pitt’s loss on Thursday, relieved and loaded the bases. He then got David Beckley on a groundout for the save.

Chris Bean (2-2) pitched five innings. Brian Callahan (8-4) was the loser.

Tennessee 6, Georgia Tech 4

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Matt Whitley went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and scored four times as Tennessee (50-14) eliminated Georgia Tech (38-22).

The top-seeded Vols (50-14) will play Oklahoma State, 15-4 winners over California.

Ed Lewis drove in three runs for the Vols and Todd Helton had a pair of RBIs.

Ryan Meyers (9-2) got the win and Helton got two outs for his 12th save. David Elder (10-5) gave up three runs in 2 1-3 innings.

Oklahoma St. 15, California 4

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Chris Nelson pitched 7 1-3 innings and Oklahoma State parlayed three hits into an eight-run sixth.

Nelson (11-4) gave up six hits, four runs, struck out six and walked three. He was in complete command until the score reached 12-1, when the Golden Bears scored three runs on a pair of walks and Mike Wolger’s homer.

Ryan Drese (5-6) took the loss.


Central Michigan 14, NE Louisiana 11

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Toby Kominek hit a two-run homer during a seven-run first innings for Central Michigan (41-18), which eliminated Northeast Louisiana (37-20) from its second NCAA tournament appearance.

Central Michigan had 25 hits to 17 for Northeast Louisiana.

John Pikur (5-5) was the winner and Troy Novak got a save. Brian Carter (7-3) was the loser.

Cal State-Fullerton 9, James Madison 1

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Jon Ward gave up one hit in 6 1-3 innings, struck out six and walked six as top-ranked Cal State-Fullerton (51-9) eliminated James Madison (42-17).

Ward (9-3), a junior who was drafted by the New York Mets three years ago, lost his no-hit bid in the sixth inning when Juan Dorsey bunted for a single.

Fullerton had 16 hits, including a two-run homer by Tony Miranda. Jeff Hafer (6-2) was the loser.

Atlantic I

Mississippi 8, Troy St. 5

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Joe Ignatius scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the eighth as Ole Miss eliminate Troy State.

Mississippi (38-21) advanced to an elimination-round game Saturday against the loser of Friday night’s game between Old Dominion and Central Florida.

Troy State (27-23-1) led 3-0 in the seventh before Matt Abernathy’s 10th home run.

The Rebels took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the eighth, going ahead on when Justin Ludington (6-6) threw a wild pitch with a runner on third. by David Dellucci and Jeffrey Johnson added homers in a four-run ninth that gave the Rebels an 8-3 lead.

Mickey Callaway (7-7) allowed nine hits in 8 2-3 innings.

Florida St. 7, South Alabama 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Mike Martin Jr. drove in four runs as Florida State (50-14) eliminated the Jaguars (41-17).

Martin’s two-run, two-out single single off Marty Barnett (9-2) in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie. He also hit a pair of sacrifice flies.

David Yocum (12-2) pitched a five-hitter and struck out eight.

Old Dominion 7, Central Florida 6

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Shortstop Chad Sheffer’s error in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the tying and winning runs to score as Old Dominion (39-18) defeated Central Florida.

The loss sends Central Florida (49-12) into the loser’s bracket to play Mississippi. Old Dominion plays Florida State on Saturday in the winners’ bracket.

With runners on second and third, Maika Symmonds hit a routine ground ball that went through the legs of Sheffer. Both runners crossed for the 7-6 lead.

Atlantic II

North Carolina 6, South Florida 3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Mike Stoner and David Boone hit first-inning homers, and Sean Murphy (11-4) struck out 12 in 8 1-3 innings for the Tar Heels (38-21).

Murphy allowed three runs and three hits, walking seven.

Mark Roberts (8-7) allowed four runs and six hits in three innings.

North Carolina plays the winner of the game between Texas A&M and Florida International. South Florida (38-24) plays the winner of the Miami-Massachusetts game.

Fla. International 9, Texas A&M 5

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Evan Thomas won his 15th game of the year and Florida International rallied with four runs in the fifth inning to beat Texas A&M.

Thomas (15-2), who had the second-highest victory total in the nation during the season, went eight innings giving up seven hits and striking out 10.

Justin Atchley (9-5) took the loss for the Aggies (50-9), allowing 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Francisco Lebron hit a home run and drove in four runs and Malcolm Warfield went 3-for-5 with three RBI’s.


Middle Tennessee St. 5, SW Missouri St. 3

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) _ Steve Hacker hit his 37th home run of the season as his Southwest Missouri (37-21) team was eliminated.

Richie Conway (6-6) balked with a runner on third in the third inning as Middle Tennessee (36-26) fell behind. The Blue Raiders went ahead in the third on a two-run error by third baseman Brad Kennedy and pinch-hitter Jaime Walker’s single off Jarrod Mays (10-1).

Chris Goggin’s RBI single made it 4-1 in the fifth. Hacker, the Division I home run leader, connected in the eighth.

USC 22, Fresno St. 17

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) _ Southern California and Fresno State combined for an NCAA postseason record 39 runs in the Trojans’ 22-17 victory. The host Bulldogs (41-22) were eliminated, while the Trojans (43-18) stayed unbeaten.

With the game tied at 15, Shorty Farfan (1-4) walked in a run, gave up a two-run double to Ernie Diaz and a sacrifice fly to Wes Rachel, making a winner of Jason Garner (6-1).

USC got three runs in the top of the ninth to break the record of 37 set by the Trojans and Houston in 1990.

Midwest I

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Rain forced the postponement of three opening-round games to Saturday.

Texas Tech will play Providence at 10 a.m. CDT, with Wichita State playing Lamar at 1:30 p.m. and Stanford playing Arkansas at 5 p.m. The elimination game between the losers of the first and second games will be played at 8:30 p.m.
