Columbus tennis over Northeast
Columbus High girls tennis opened the season in dominant fashion with a 9-0 victory over Lincoln Northeast on Friday in Columbus.
The Discoverers won four singles matchups by three or more games then carried that performance over to doubles competition where the best the Rockets could do was manage three wins.
Columbus also accepted a forfeit in two spots and shut out an opponent in both singles and doubles.
The junior varsity squad was just as dominant with an identical 9-0 final. Between 122 total games played in varsity and JV, Columbus lost just 18 times.
“A good start to the season, and no complaints about perfect tennis weather,” coach Dave Licari said in comments sent to The Telegram.
“We played good overall tennis especially considering four of our six girls were playing in the first varsity match of their career. The girls are looking forward to their next dual on Tuesday in Norfolk. The Panthers will be a tough matchup.”
Results against Northeast included Addi Duranski accepting a forfeit at No. 1 singles followed by wins of 8-3, 8-1, 8-1, 8-5 and 8-0 for the likes of Lauren Benck, Aspen Luebbe, Emily Miksch, Melanie Jones and Brooke Benck, in that order.
Luebbe and Miksch then teamed up for No. 1 doubles and shut out their opponents 8-0. Brooke Benck and Duranski were 8-3 winners at No. 2. Lauren Benck and Jones accepted a forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
