Seattle says more hate crimes are being reported to police
SEATTLE (AP) — A new report says the number of hate crimes being reported has risen in Washington state’s largest city.
KING-TV reports that Seattle police received 521 hate crime reports in 2018 compared to 106 reports in 2012.
The Seattle city auditor’s office produced the report using police department data.
The number of reported hate crimes between 2012 and 2014 remained fewer than 130 cases each year. There were 205 reported cases in 2015, another 256 in 2016 and 418 cases reported in 2017.
The auditor’s office says the rise does not mean there are more hate crimes occurring, but that more reports indicate police have prioritized those types of crimes.
The report says 37 reported malicious harassment cases in Seattle resulted in convictions between 2012 and 2017.
