N.J. Town Nixes Springsteen Statue

May 12, 1999

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) _ Plans for a statue of The Boss are off in his hometown.

Officials in Freehold nixed the Bruce Springsteen statue because of its escalating cost. The original estimate was just over $150,000, said Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer.

``But now we’re finding out that it’ll be closer to $200,000 to get it done,″ she said.

That kind of money could be better spent elsewhere in the municipal budget, Shutzer said Monday. Mayor Michael Wilson, who originally suggested the sculpture, said public support for the plan wasn’t that strong to begin with.

Springsteen, who sang of Freehold as a fading town of ``whitewashed windows and vacant stores″ in ``My Hometown,″ is currently on a world tour with the E Street Band.

Neither his publicist, Seth Cohen, nor his manager, Jon Landau, would comment Tuesday on the town’s change of heart.
