LOCAL SPORTS Western Middle School girls team captures town title

Western Middle School capped an undefeated season by defeating Eastern Middle School in the title game of the Middle School Girls Town Basketball Championships recently, before a big crowd at Western Middle School.

With the championship win, Western Middle School finished its season with a record of 11-0. In the championship game, Western team jumped out to a quick lead on steals that resulted into points by Mackenzie Nelson and Ava Sollene.

Nelson and Sollene combined to score 50 points for Western Middle School. Cece Tauber, Fallon Martin, Sophia Sergio, Julia Tamis and Mackenzie Murphy also helped pace Western’s offense. Kayla Perez, Ava Granito, Bridgette Carriello, Camdyn Nelson, Emma Sollene, Flynn Tauber and Alyssa Gath were among Western’s key defenders in the title matchup.

The win completed the Western Middle School girls team’s first undefeated season. The title-winning team was coached by Seth Kalinski and Gaspare Lipari.

In the boys Middle School championship game, Eastern defeated Western in a hard-fought, back-and-forth game, 49-44.
