Jacksonville St. 28, Ala.-Birmingham 26
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Jacksonville State defensive back Eurosius Parker ended a madcap 40-yard chase for a fumbled ball, setting up the go-ahead touchdown in a 28-26 Gamecock victory over Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday.
With less than 5 minutes left, Kevin Drake failed to connect on a pitchout to running back Terry Collier. Almost every player on the JSU (3-0) defense tried to capture the ball, which bounced 40 yards down a rain-soaked field.
Parker caught up to the ball at the UAB 2 and fell on it.
On the next play, JSU’s Amel Jackson ran for the touchdown. Quarterback JeDarius Isaac’s two-point conversion pass to Rick Schomburg gave the Gamecocks a 21-20 lead.
UAB (0-3) fumbled again on the next series, giving the Gamecocks the ball at the UAB 20 yard line. It took Jacksonville three plays to score on a 10-yard run by Jackson, making the score 28-20 with 2:02 left.
UAB quarterback Rodney Hudson led the Blazers 68 yards down the field for a touchdown with 15 seconds left, making it 28-26 for JSU, but his attempt at a 2-point conversion pass failed.
UAB dominated the first half on rushing touchdowns by Collier and Chris Daniels and a 45-yard field goal by Thomason.
