Harvard 6, RPI 3
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) _ Matt Mallgrave snapped a tie early in the third period Saturday night with his second goal of the game as Harvard rebounded from a semifinal upset and defeated RPI 6-3 in the consolation game of the ECAC playoffs.
Harvard (22-5-3), the regular-season ECAC champion for the second straight year, was upset 3-1 by Brown in the semifinals Friday night. But the Crimson got a measure of revenge against the Engineers (20-11-4), who ousted them from the ECAC quarterfinals last year. Brown played Clarkson for the title later Saturday night.
RPI, which finished the season in second place, lost 5-3 to Clarkson in the semifinals. The loss to Harvard dimmed the Engineers’ hopes of their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since they won the national championship in 1985. Bids are to be announced Sunday night.
Trailing 3-2 entering the third period, RPI rallied for a tie. Kelly Askew scored his 14th goal of the season off a feed from behind the net by Ron Pasco at 2:01.
But the Crimson went ahead for good just over three minutes later, capitalizing on a breakdown by the RPI defense. Mallgrave picked up a loose puck deep in the RPI zone and beat goalie Neil Little at 5:23.
Harvard stepped up the attack, but Little, who finished with 36 saves, kept the Crimson at bay. He stopped Mallgrave’s bid for a hat trick off a cross-ice feed from Ted Drury, and made two saves on shots by Perry Cohagan just seconds later.
But Steve Martins gave the Crimson some breathing room at 8:36 with a sparkling individual effort, scoring from the slot after being checked to his knees. Drury added an empty-net goal, his 22nd goal of the year, with five seconds left in the game.
