Brigham Young 89, New Mexico 82

PROVO, Utah (AP) _ Michael Smith scored 24 points and Jeff Chatman added 19 as No. 15 Brigham Young overcame an 11-point deficit Thursday night and beat New Mexico 89-82.

New Mexico led 65-54 with 10:46 left, but Brigham Young scored eight consecutive points to close within three with 9:01 left.

The Lobos still led by three with 3:05 to go, but Brigham Young, 24-3 and 13-2 in the Western Athletic Conference, scored nine consecutive points to lead 83-77 with 47 seconds left.

Charlie Thomas and Hunter Greene sccored 20 points each for New Mexico, 20-11 and 8-7.

Smith and Brian Taylor made 3-pointers during the first Brigham Young run run and Jim Usevitch made two free throws.

The Cougars tied it at 73 with 4:28 remaining on Taylor’s free throw, but New Mexico went ahead 77-74 on Rob Loeffel’s short hook with 3:05 left.

Andy Toolson then opened the 9-0 run with a 3-pointer followed by a lay-up. Taylor and Nathan Call added a pair of free throws each to give Brigham Young a six-point lead.

Jimmy Rogers scored five points sandwiched around a Chapman dunk to close New Mexico to 85-82 with 15 seconds left.

Marty Haws missed the front end of a one-and-one but Call stole the ball from Rogers with three seconds remaining to prevent a final shot by the Lobos.

Usevitch scored 15 points, Toolson 13 and Taylor 12 for the Cougars.
