Mitchell Johnson wins Allan Border Medal

January 20, 2014

SYDNEY (AP) — Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has continued his startling resurgence in international cricket by winning the Allan Border Medal as Australia’s player of the year.

Johnson’s performance in the Ashes test series, in which he claimed 37 wickets as Australia beat England 5-0, allowed him to come from behind to edge captain Michael Clarke with 168 votes to 156.

At 32, Johnson won the Medal for the first time while Clarke was narrowly denied a record fifth win and his third in successive years.

Johnson said “it has been an amazing journey coming back from injury, having a lot of doubters ... but I just knew in my own heart that if I had that opportunity that I could make the most of it.”
