Utah man gets week in jail for cat killing
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 20-year-old Utah man who checked himself into a mental unit after he admitted strangling his cat has been sentenced to a week in jail and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Tyler Anthony Strickland of Taylorsville was convicted in September of aggravated cruelty to animals, a class A misdemeanor.
The Deseret News reports he was sentenced on Friday to a week in jail — with credit for the one day he’s already served — and placed on 36 months’ probation.
The charging documents say he strangled his cat, Garfield, before checking into the University Neuropsychiatric Unit in May. He also allegedly admitted he had strangled his two other cats within the last six months.
Detectives who searched Strickland’s home found one cat’s body wrapped in a blanket in a box.
