New median U-turn to open at US 30 and Indiana 101
A median U-turn at U.S. 30 and Indiana 101 is expected to open to traffic Thursday afternoon, weather permitting, the Indiana Department of Transportation said tonight.
The median U-turn, the first in northeast Indiana, is an alternative to traditional intersections on a divided four-lane highway, INDOT said in a statement.
Instead of crossing fast-moving traffic from two directions, the statement said, drivers at the median U-turn turn right in the same direction of traffic, merge into a dedicated left-turn lane and then make a U-turn in the direction they intend to travel.
Although drivers will have to travel slightly farther, it said, the median U-turns can take the same or less time than waiting to safely cross all lanes of traffic.
INDOT said median U-turns have been shown to reduce or eliminate injury crashes common when drivers try to cross busy divided highways.
It said a median U-turn installed at U.S. 41 and Indiana 114/County Road 400 in Newton County, open since 2015, has had only one injury accident and fewer non-injury crashes in more than three years, despite a 14 percent increase in traffic.
