NEW YORK (AP) _ Columbia ended 37 years of freshman football Friday as the Lions routed Cornell 39-0.

Ivy League presidents decided last year to discontinue freshman teams to save money. The Ivy League was the last Division I conference in which freshmen were ineligible for varsity football teams. Freshmen will become eligible starting with the 1993 season.

Marcellus Wiley caught a 40-yard touchdown pass, threw for a 7-yard touchdown on an option play and gained 70 yards in nine carries for Columbia (2-4). Tommy Lewis caught touchdowns passes of 30 and 7 yards from Matt Lenzen and Wiley.

The Lions intercepted five passes by Cornell (2-4).
