PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Matt Williams homered to lead off the second inning and Mike Portugal pitched five scoreless innings Tuesday as the San Francisco Giants beat the Seattle Mariners 16-1.

Williams, who led the majors in home runs with 42 last year, hit his second of the spring, a drive off Chris Bosio (0-2).

San Francisco added two runs in the third off Bosio. Robbie Thompson doubled in a run and another scored when Williams grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.

A walk and five straight hits produced five runs in the fifth off John Cummings, a candidate for the fifth spot in the Mariners' starting rotation. Barry Bonds hit a two-run double, J.R. Phillips hit a two-run single and Kirt Manwaring hit an RBI single.

San Francisco added six runs in the eighth off Jim Mecir.
