Cause of NYC teen basketball player’s death as yet unknown

NEW YORK (AP) — Medical examiners are working to determine why a 16-year-old boy collapsed at basketball practice and died, and his mother says she has no idea what befell her healthy son.

The city medical examiners’ office was working Thursday on the case of Lenny Pierre, who died Wednesday. Police said he went into cardiac arrest at John Bowne High School in the Flushing section of Queens.

Edna Georges tells local media her son didn’t have any health problems or allergies and wasn’t on any medication. She says she was informed that he started feeling lightheaded and shaky at basketball practice and then passed out.

Lenny was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a statement saying he was “heartbroken” at the boy’s death.
