Refrigerant leak forces evacuation of mall
KINGSTON, Mass. (AP) — An irritating odor at a Kingston mall that landed 10 people in the hospital and forced the evacuation of the entire mall has been blamed on a refrigerant leak that originated in the food court.
Officials who responded to the Independence Mall at about 4:25 p.m. Tuesday said 30 people were evaluated at the scene and 10 were taken to hospitals as a precaution. Officials said people reported coughing and having breathing issues.
Kingston’s fire chief said the odor was caused by an accidental leak of a refrigerant from a vendor in the food court.
The mall about 40 miles south of Boston was expected to reopen on Wednesday.
