SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) _ A high school basketball player, who was told he couldn’t play in a game because of missed practices, died after he was hit in the chest during a neighborhood pickup game, police said.
Bobby Labidou, 16, was going up for a jump shot Tuesday when he was struck by another player’s elbow, witnesses said. He became dizzy and collapsed, then died at Westside Regional Medical Center, officials said.
Labidou had been told he wouldn’t play in Piper High School’s game Tuesday night because he had missed too many practices, said coach Davis Kiger.
``He missed a lot of practices for the Christmas holiday,″ Kiger said. ``He was held at home for whatever reason by his parents.″
Kiger said he expected Labidou to show up for the game even though he would sit on the bench.
An autopsy was being performed to determine the exact cause of death. No charges have been filed.
