Grace Reichart -- Lynchburg, Va.

May 19, 2019

Grace “Gracie” Reichart, 84, formerly of Rochester, passed away on May 15, 2019, in Lynchburg, Va., where she had moved to be near family after suffering a stroke in 2010.

Affectionately called “Bear” by her children, Renee Reichart Falzone (husband Michael) of Richmond, Va., Wendy Reichart Cardwell (husband John) of Lynchburg, Va., and Ron Reichart (wife Tracey) of Boulder, Colo., and “GrannyBear” by her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Grace will always be remembered for her hearty laugh, her great sense of humor and fun, her love of sports, her great big hugs, and her feisty yet kind, patient and wise spirit.

Raised on a farm in St. Thomas, N.D., along with three sisters and a brother (surviving siblings include Carol Redmann Dupras of Surprise, Ariz., and Sharon Redmann of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), Grace loved the outdoors and sports from a young age. When she moved to Rochester in 1961 with her former husband of 20 years, Bill Reichart of Pinehurst, N.C. (wife Betty) and their three children, she became actively involved in Rochester Park and Recreation sports programs, including slow-pitch softball, which she played until she was 40 years old. Other favorite sports included volleyball, golf, bowling, and racquetball, for which she was inducted into the Rochester Racquetball Hall of Fame. She also was an avid sports fan, especially evident at her son’s and husband’s hockey games, where she could be seen, and heard, vigorously clanging her hefty cowbell!

Besides raising a family and being involved with sports, Grace briefly served as the interim director of the Rochester YWCA. She went on to work for Mayo Clinic, as a phlebotomist at Saint Marys Hospital, for over 25 years. Her patience, kindness, sense of humor, and precision made her the one you wanted to see come through your door when you needed a blood draw!

We will miss seeing our Gracie Bear, but her beautiful spirit and legacy of love, joy, and vitality, will live on in the lives of the many people she touched. She truly was amazing Grace!

A Rochester celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.
