Father Gives Teen-age Daughter Gun, She Shoots Fiance After Broken Engagement
RIESI, Italy (AP) _ A 16-year-old girl shot and killed her fiance in the main square of this small Sicilian town after he broke off their engagement, police said Sunday.
Giuseppina Rindone shot 21-year-old Giuseppe Porrovecchio Friday in front of her father Alberto, who had given her the pistol, police said.
Alberto Rindone, who works in West Germany, returned to Riesi last week, apparently because his wife, Emma Valenzola, told him the engagement had been broken off, police said.
″Giuseppina is a good girl,″ the Italian news agency ANSA quoted Mrs. Valenzola as saying, ″and her honor is worth running even the risk of life in prison.″
The girl and her father were immediately detained.
″We can’t believe it is simply a crime of honor,″ said a police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity. ″That’s why we are investigating on other grounds. People are not so old-fashioned here, and there have not been expressions of solidarity toward the girl so far.″
