Broomfield’s Larkburger Closes Doors

Larkburger is closing six of its restaurants — two in Kansas City and four in Colorado — including Broomfield.

The company announced the decision Tuesday, the same day the locations were closed. Other Colorado locations included downtown Denver, Washington Park and University Hills.

In all, about 80 employees were affected by the closings, a spokeswoman from Larkburger said, but the company is working with restaurant teams to relocate a number of people to remaining locations.

All of those not relocated who held salaried positions will receive a severance and 30-day extension of benefits to support them while they search for a new job, she said.

Of those 80 employees, 10 worked in the Broomfield restaurant, near 120th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard.

The Broomfield restaurant had been under-performing for a couple of years, the spokeswoman said. Larkburger considered a variety of indicators when deciding which locations to shutter, including historical sales and customer-count trends, cost of rent, and target demographics by trade area.

Larkburger now has eight remaining locations, including Lark Spot in Arvada.

“The closed restaurants were unfortunately underperforming and financially holding us back from fully pursuing our evolution from Larkburger to Lark Spot,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

The Larkburger originated at the Larkspur restaurant in Vail.

Because of popular response to the “Larkburger” on Thomas Salamunovich’s fine dining Larkspur Restaurant menu, the chef and his team sought to create an all-natural gourmet burger, and in 2006, Larkburger, the restaurant, was born.

The Broomfield restaurant, which was the company’s eleventh location, opened in December 2012.
