August 17, 2018

WILKES-BARRE — The NAACP Wilkes-Barre Chapter will host this year’s Freedom Fund Banquet at the Westmoreland Club in Wilkes-Barre, and Robert Williams, the club’s chief operating officer and general manager since 2005, is the honorary chairman. Under Williams’ leadership, the Westmoreland Club achieved Platinum Club status in 2009, was ranked No. 8 city club in the country in 2012 and received Distinguished Emerald Club of the World status in 2014. This year, for the first time, city clubs were included in the ranking of Platinum Clubs of the World, and the Westmoreland Club is now among the top 100 clubs worldwide, with only 29 of those clubs in the United States. In addition to holding numerous national memberships, Williams, a certified club manager and executive chef, is a member of the Downtown Wilkes-Barre Business Association. He resides in Mountain Top with his wife, Jeanette. The Freedom Fund Banquet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 27. More details will be released in the coming weeks. Chapter officials hope the community will support the event, proceeds of which help the civil rights organization fulfill its mission to ensure political, educational, social and economic equality for all people, and to eliminate race-based discrimination. Members of the banquet planning committee are David Barber, Lauren Barnes, Tony Brooks, Guerline L. Laurore, chairwoman; Max Laurore, Andita Parker Lloyd, Jay Nortasamo and Dr. Andrew Wilczac. Anyone interested in joining the committee should call Laurore at 570-262-1360. — STAFF REPORT
