Ex-Media General Exec Evans Dies
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ James S. Evans, retired president and chief executive officer of Media General Inc., has died following an asthma attack. He was 77.
Evans, who died Tuesday, joined Media General in 1973 to fill the newly created job of vice president, supervising the company’s newspaper divisions. He was elected senior vice president in 1977 and executive vice president three years later.
He oversaw the firm’s newsprint manufacturing and recycling division and for a time led the company’s efforts in cable television operations.
In 1982, Evans became president and chief operating officer and was elected to Media General’s board of directors. He was named CEO in 1985, a position he held for five years.
Evans was born in Joplin, Mo., and grew up in Defiance, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice, and two sons.
