Driver Who Allegedly Struck Tewksbury Cruiser Released; Ordered Not to Drive

May 9, 2019

LOWELL -- A Lawrence resident who allegedly drove head-on into a Tewksbury police cruiser earlier this week was arraigned on several motor vehicle charges.

Jorge Joel Gomez Guzman, 21, stood in front of Judge Tejal Mehta in Lowell District Court on Thursday for his arraignment on three charges stemming from the car accident on Tuesday morning.

Guzman was driving a van westbound on Route 133 near Cooney Road when he crossed into the eastbound lane at about 6:46 a.m. and struck the Tewksbury marked Ford Explorer.

Neither he nor the officer sustained serious injuries.

Guzman was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, having an improperly registered vehicle and a marked lane violation.

Attorney Karen McDonough was appointed to Guzman by the court.

Assistant District Attorney Gregory Galizio required no cash bail for Guzman to remain released but did require Guzman to accept the condition that he not be allowed to drive throughout the duration of the case.

Judge Mehta accepted and set a pretrial hearing date for June 25.
