Ohio teacher charged over relationship with student 15 years ago

LANCASTER, Ohio — A teacher at Lancaster High School has been charged with sexual battery because of a reportedly sexual relationship she had with a 16-year-old student about 15 years ago.

Eddie Black, 47, eventually married the student but they divorced in 2013, Lancaster City Schools Superintendent Steve Wigton tells WCMH Channel 4.

The former student didn’t report the relationship to police until April of this year, according to the Lancaster Eagle Gazette.

Now Black has been placed on administrative leave by the school district, which is taking action to have the teacher fired. Wigton tells the Eagle Gazette that Black will not return to the high school.

Black was arraigned Monday on the third-degree felony and released on a $30,000 bond.

The crime reportedly occurred from 2003 to 2005. Fairfield County Prosecutor Kyle Witt says in a statement there was no option but to charge Black.

“The law in Ohio with respect to teacher-student relationships is very clear,” Witt says in the statement, according to ABC 6. “Teachers may not engage in sexual conduct with students regardless of age, gender, or circumstance. We will prosecute this and any other case where the evidence suggests such conduct took place.”
