Vitacca Dance leaps to Charles Bender in Humble for 2019 season

January 25, 2019

A familiar company will revisit Humble this weekend.

The Houston-based Vitacca Vocational School for Dance is setting up for one “Night at the Ballet” 7 p.m. Saturday at the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center. Its namesake founder, Kelly Ann Vitacca, was thankful for yet another opportunity to showcase classic and contemporary dance works to the community.

“We performed a mixed bill last season and we will be doing the same this season,” she said. “The cast (for the show) will include dancers from Vitacca Dance Montrose and Vitacca Dance Woodlands.”

The last time the company performed, also at the Charles Bender, was in January 2018.

Vitacca and her artistic staff are choreographing some of the night’s works. Other resident and guest artists listed include Christopher Bloom, Tina Bohnstedt, Richard Bowman, Elijah Gibson, Jess Hendricks, Andrea Dawn Shelley, and Brit Wallis.

Being a company with members of different experience levels and ages, Vitacca said there will be “a wide range” of dancers on stage. However, she said that everyone has the same end goal - becoming professional, both within the U.S. and beyond.

“Vitacca Dance is known in Houston and in the southern region as a mentorship and training school for pre-professional and professional dancers that are pursuing dance as a career,” Vitacca said.

She hopes that one or more of the works during “Night at the Ballet” will form an emotional connection with and root newness within attendees.

“Something that fuels their senses,” she added. “It would be wonderful to see some familiar faces. I hope that patrons who joined us last season will be joining us again. I hope that people will take time at the end of the show to introduce themselves and tell me what they enjoyed, any feedback that they have.”

Tickets, for $15 plus a small fee, for “Night at the Ballet” are available on the Charles Bender’s official website at humblepac.com.
