Aspiring artists create poured paint masterpieces at Greenwich Art Society

January 29, 2019

GREENWICH — Artists of all skill levels can create a one-of-a-kind painted wall hanging for Valentine’s Day this year that requires no paintbrushes or complicated brushstrokes.

Greenwich Art Society Studio School teacher and mixed media specialist Ellen Gordon will show artists of any skill how to use a “poured-paint” method to make paintings that look like marbleized paper. She will add her own twist by combining the hot Do-It-Yourself style with her own love of making collages.

“It’s the latest DIY thing, many artists do it, but it looks more complicated than it is,” she said. “You don’t need artistic ability, and you get a beautiful result.”

No experience is required and all the supplies will be provided in this family-friendly class.

Going to a class on it is helpful for those who do not have someone experienced to break down the process for them, or if they do not like learning from YouTube videos, she said.

Artists will mix colors with water and a binding agent in a cup, flip the cup upside down, and when the paint is poured out, the layers stay as separate streams of color.

The technique has broad appeal: Gordon mixes poured paint into her collages, and she teaches it at a school for children with special needs, which her students love.

The event is good for kids because the painting will be done in an art studio, so parents do not have to worry about keeping the house clean, she said.

For the last year, the Greenwich Arts Society has hosted painting and socializing workshops, for people to create art, sip wine and mingle. Gordon’s class is different, however, because instead of everyone painting the same thing, the artist teaches a technique for artists just starting out or seasoned artists looking to add a new technique to their repertoire.

The class will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Greenwich Art Society’s studio on the third floor at 299 Greenwich Ave.

The cost of the workshop is $25 per adult and $15 per child. Participants can RSVP by calling 203-629-1533, or reserve tickets online at https://gasvalentinesworkshop.eventbrite.com.

Founded in 1912, the Greenwich Art Society is the oldest visual arts organization in town. Its Studio School offers classes by professional artists, providing traditional and foundational visual arts education for children and adults.
