Cigar Set For Mass ’Cap
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Cigar, the 1995 Horse of the Year, will go for his 15th consecutive victory in the Massachusetts Handicap on June 1 at Suffolk Downs.
Trainer Bill Mott said Friday that his 6-year-old superhorse worked out earlier this week at Belmont Park and is ``getting stronger.″
``That was his first work since returning from Dubai and our plans are to go to Massachusetts,″ Mott said.
The Mass ’Cap has a purse of $250,000, but Cigar has qualified for a $250,000 bonus by winning at least three graded stakes over the past 1 1-2 years. A victory would be worth $400,000 for owner Allen Paulson.
Cigar won the $4 million Dubai World Cup on March 27. His current streak put him in the company of Man ’o War and a win in Massachusetts would equal the streak of Buckpasser and would be one short of Citation’s record of 16 in a row in 1948-49.
Cigar’s winning streak began at Aqueduct in New York Oct. 28, 1994, when Mott took him off grass and began racing him on dirt. He won once more in ’94, then went 10-for-10 in 1995. He’s won the Donn Handicap and Dubai World Cup this year.
