Owner of Raleigh roofing company arrested after fraud complaints

The owner of a Raleigh roofing company has been arrested after being accused of obtaining money from nine homes without rendering services.

Ricardo Romero, 34, is charged with nine felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense and nine misdemeanor counts of failing to work after being paid. Romero is the owner of Above and Beyond Roofing.

According to arrest warrants, Romero did not order materials or provide roofs after receiving payment from nine families in Wake and Harnett County.

Officials say the amount paid by the nine households totaled $69,350.

Frustrated homeowners reached out to 5 On Your Side, and when Monica Laliberte started investigating, she learned that the North Carolina Department of Insurance was doing the same. Officials say complaints were filed with the Department of Insurance after Above and Beyond Roofing employees conducted free roof inspections following a September 2017 storm.

Senior Deputy Commissioner Marty Sumner told WRAL they started hearing complaints in April.

While the NC Department of Insurance investigation plays out, Sumner shared red flags homeowners should look for.

“I would be as skeptical of somebody going door to door solicitating after a storm like that, as I would be getting a robo call trying to sell me some kind of extended warranty on a product I don’t have,” said Sumner.

“I would NOT take advantage of anybody’s offer to say we’ll deal with your insurance company. You’re the one that’s insured,” he added.
