Mother, ex-boyfriend charged with murder in death of Chatham County 1-year-old

December 20, 2018

A Durham man and his former girlfriend have been charged with murder in connection with the 2017 death of the woman’s 1-year-old son.

Pittsboro police said officers responded to an apartment at 127 Broadmoore Drive, on July 16, 2017, after receiving a 911 call about an unresponsive infant.

The baby was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy later determined the cause of death to be “blunt force trauma of the chest and abdomen.”

The boy’s mother, Josalyn Upchurch, 28, of Moncure, and her former boyfriend, Rickey Adams, 39, were charged on Wednesday with first-degree murder and felony child abuse.

Adams, who was already being held at the Durham County Detention Center for unrelated charges, was served with arrest warrants. He is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court in Chatham County on Thursday.

Upchurch was not in custody Wednesday evening.
