Police: No active links between Filipino, IS group militants

December 8, 2015

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police say there is no sign of any active collaboration between Filipino Muslim militants and the Islamic State group to which they have pledged allegiance.

Police Director for Intelligence Generoso Cerbo said Tuesday that close monitoring of local Muslim militants who have openly pledged support to the Islamic State group’s leader has shown no evidence of any financial or combat support either way.

Militants from at least four small Philippine Muslim groups, including the brutal Abu Sayyaf, have posted videos of themselves online using Islamic State group-style black flags and swearing support to the militants in Syria and Iraq.

National police chief Ricardo Marquez said no specific terrorist threat has been monitored during the Christmas holidays in the largely Catholic Philippines.
