Victims ID’d in crash that killed woman, injured officer
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — The Highway Patrol has identified the people involved in a crash in Williston that killed a woman and injured a police officer.
Authorities say a police sport utility vehicle driven by 33-year-old Sgt. Dustin Bertsch and a passenger car driven by 29-year-old Wendy Newsome collided at an intersection about 4 a.m. Tuesday.
The patrol says Newsome had a green light, and Bertsch was responding to a call and going through a red light with his emergency lights and siren activated.
Newsome was killed, and Bertsch was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries. His police dog also was injured and taken to a veterinarian.
The crash prompted the shutdown of U.S. Highway 2 in the area for about 5 ½ hours. The patrol is continuing to investigate.
