Memorial Bike Ride Raises Funds For W-B YMCA

The Gary A. Michak Lake Fest Ride was held at Harveys Lake on Saturday, Aug. 4. The charity driven event was held on Michak’s birthday, with proceeds going to children at the Wilkes Barre Family YMCA. A group of Gary and Courtney Michak’s family and friends came together to form a committee called Gary’s Corner, serving the community to honor Gary’s life and legacy. Michak’s widow said her husband dedicated his life to giving back to others. He supported and advocated for others in his roles as martial arts sensi, family law attorney and community member. Gary’s Corner plans to make the charity ride a Lake Fest annual event to celebrate Michak and serve the local community. Bicyclists participating in The Gary A. Michak Lake Fest Ride gathered at Lake-Noxen Elementary School where Michak was remembered and celebrated. Charlie Hayes provided music, Photos by Jay photographed the event and the Rev. Daniel Toomey offered a blessing for Michak and all the event riders and volunteers. More than $20,000 was raised through sponsorships, donations from the cyclists and support from volunteers within the community. The check was presented to the Wilkes-Barre YMCA on Sept. 20, the anniversary of Michak’s passing, and will be used toward scholarships and children’s programs at the Wilkes-Barre YMCA. Event organizers acknowledged personal and major business sponsors including Martz Group, RN Fitch & Sons-McGrath Enterprises, Nardone Bros. Pizza, Minuteman Press, Pediatric Associates of Kingston, and Valor Counseling. A complete list of sponsors can be found on rideforgary.org and Gary’s Corner Facebook Page.
