Sheriff’s deputy suspended for unauthorized inmate video
HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — A northwestern Indiana sheriff’s deputy cleared four months ago of a rape charge has been suspended for posting an unauthorized social-media video.
The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that Nicholas Medrano was suspended for five days. The brief Instagram video showed the 35-year-old Lake County deputy transporting an inmate and both were smiling and bobbing their heads to music.
County Police Chief William Paterson says the video constituted unauthorized dissemination of department information.
The sheriff’s department also says it is looking into a stalking complaint made by a woman who says she previously had a relationship with Medrano. Officials would not comment further.
Medrano has an unlisted telephone number and could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Prosecutors dropped 2017 rape charges against Medrano earlier this year because of insufficient evidence.
