Stetson 75, Furman 73
DELAND, Fla. (AP) _ Mario Haynes and Steve Hoffert combined for all seven of Stetson’s overtime points as the Hatters defeated Furman 75-73 Saturday.
Haynes sank three of four free throws in overtime that gave the Hatters (1-3) a 71-68 lead. Furman tied it again at 71-71 on two Chuck Vincent free throws. Then Hoffert scored a rebound basket and a jumper off a Haynes steal that gave Stetson a 75-71 lead.
Furman, which scored all its overtime points from the line, closed to 75-73 on two Bubba Smith free throws with 51 seconds left.
Furman (1-4) forced overtime when Smith connected on his fifth three-pointer of the game that tied it at 68-68 with six seconds remaining in regulation.
Smith led the Paladins with a career high 27 points, shooting 8 of 12 from the field. He hit five of six from three-point range. Chuck Vincent added 14, Patrick Garner had 11 and Andre Kerr 10.
Willie Robertson scored a career high 17 for Stetson, followed by Chad Lambert with 16. Each was 7 of 10 from the field.
Stetson trailed 27-20 late in the first half, but rallied to take a 37-34 haltime lead on David Watts’ three-pointer with two seconds remaining.
