Man gets 47-year sentence in fatal shooting of taxi driver

June 19, 2019

EAST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — A man who allegedly ran away laughing after a taxi driver was fatally shot during a robbery is now headed to prison.

Sheedley Pierre received a 47-year sentence Tuesday. The Orange man was convicted last month of felony murder, robbery and numerous other counts stemming from the November 2016 killing of 55-year-old Jonas Larose.

Essex County prosecutors say Pierre and a 14-year-old boy pulled a gun on Larose and tried to rob him. The shooting occurred moments later, and authorities say the pair fled the taxi without getting any money.

Police later found Larose dead in his crashed vehicle in Orange. The married father of four had been shot twice in the head.

Authorities haven’t said who fired the fatal shots. Pierre’s juvenile accomplice is serving a 10-year sentence.
