RI lake’s bacteria levels remain at high for unknown reasons
COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island lake remains closed to boaters and swimmers due to unusually high bacteria levels.
Tiogue Lake and its beach in Coventry have been closed for 11 days, and the cause has still not been determined. The Providence Journal reports the type of bacteria found in the lake is spread through human and animal waste, but closures typically should only last a few days.
Bacteria levels have remained persistently high since the lake closed in late June.
Coventry is working with the health department, the state Department of Environmental Management and the University of Rhode Island to pinpoint the source or sources of contamination.
Despite the high counts, some residents say they were still using the lake.
