Elderly Man Shoots Wife in Florida

December 27, 2000

DELTONA, Fla. (AP) _ An elderly man fatally shot his ailing wife Tuesday in what police described as a mercy killing.

Investigators said Leo Visco, 80, made a suicide pact with his wife Eva, 74, who had been suffering from cancer.

Visco told investigators he had dressed and fed his wife, then shot her in the head with a .22-caliber revolver. He said he had been unable to honor his part of their suicide agreement and called police.

The two had discussed suicide for months, investigators said.

Visco told investigators he wanted to end his wife’s suffering because she had been in declining health for two years and was depressed and unable to take care of herself.

Leo Visco was charged with attempted first-degree murder, which was expected to be upgraded Wednesday. Police said he did not yet have an attorney.
