N.Y. Post To Cut Newsstand Price

NEW YORK (AP) _ The New York Post is cutting its daily newsstand price to 25 cents, half its current price and that of its main competitor.

The reduction in price of the morning tabloid starts Monday and applies to Monday through Saturday editions sold in the city, Publisher Ken Chandler said.

The move comes two weeks after the Daily News, the Post’s main competitor, announced it would begin distributing a free evening edition on Sept. 12.

The Post, which competes for advertising with the News and The New York Times, hopes the lower price and improvements related to a new color printing plant opening next year will help it capture a larger share of the city’s newspaper readership.

The Post, which is owned by News Corp., last experimented with a 25 cent price for two years in the mid-1990s on Staten Island. Company officials said the newspaper’s daily circulation in that borough doubled to 12,000, adding that just 1,000 subscribers were lost when the price returned to 50 cents.
