Pee Dee Coalition to host events highlighting fight against domestic violence
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault will host a number of events in October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The coalition will be hosting events through the month of October in Florence, Dillon, Chesterfield, Marion, Marlboro, Darlington and Williamsburg counties.
Ellen Hamilton, executive director for the coalition, said October is an important month for the organization.
“Each October, we try to ensure that each county has a number of events, but we also speak to our local governments and ask us to assist us in spreading the word,” Hamilton said. “We’ve been doing this for over 30 years in each of our counties, not just Florence.”
In Florence County, the coalition will have a “Communities of Color Listening Session” on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Florence County Library; a Joint Legislative and Citizen’s Committee on Children Public Hearing on Thursday, Oct. 4; a Balloon Release at the Timmonsville Town Hall on Saturday, Oct. 13; a Domestic Violence Presentation on Friday, Oct. 21; and a Men’s Walk Against Domestic Violence on Thursday, Oct. 27.
“The month really is celebrating those survivors and recognizing those who have died, and those people that help victims,” Hamilton said. “It’s a time that we can pay attention to the impact. A lot of time it starts in dating relationships, so it’s really important to talk to young people and try to prevent as much as we can. It’s a tough topic, no doubt.”
