Phil Collins and Rita Coolidge take over this week’s Also Playing column

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A couple of music scene veterans take over Also Playing this week: Rita Coolidge and Phil Collins.

Rita Coolidge, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, the Kent Stage. Coolidge, who won two Grammys in her long career, was once married to Kris Kristofferson (can you say “A Star Is Born”?) and has one of THE most impressive resumes in music. Her credits include singing alongside Leon Russell, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills – in addition to the aforementioned Kristofferson – as noted by the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, News. Her biggest hit probably is ”(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher,″ but hers is an instantly recognizable voice. Tickets, $28 to $38, plus fees, are available at the box office, online at thekentstage.com and ticketfly.com, and by phone at 330-677-5005.

Phil Collins, 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, Quicken Loans Arena. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer – he’s in as part of Genesis – is only in his 60s, but spinal surgeries and a life of performing have taken their toll on his body, if not the voice of the man who has declined to do press to promote the show. His current tour is getting strong reviews, despite Collins’ inability to stand and performing while seated. He’s still onstage for 115 minutes, according to a Washington Post review: “And he opened the show with 1984′s mega-smash ‘Against All Odds’ — a song that had him repeatedly begging everybody, ‘Take a look at me now!’ — while sitting in a chair, in which he spent all but a few minutes of the 115-minute performance. Collins, who is 67 but looking so much older, calls his roadshow the ‘Not Dead Yet Tour,’ a seemingly knowing wink at his frail physical state. But while the vessel has aged, the songs were timeless.” Tickets, $89 to $275, plus fees, are available at the box office, at Discount Drug Mart locations, at theqarena.com and by phone at 1-888-894-9424.
