Panthers’ Gilbert Fined for Socks

October 27, 2000

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Sean Gilbert of the Carolina Panthers was fined $5,000 for violating the league’s dress code _ showing too much white on his uniform’s socks.

The violation came during last week’s game against San Francisco.

The defensive end said he was aware of the NFL’s strict policy and had been warned by the league about his socks. Still, he was surprised when the fine came down Thursday.

``The uniform police are out before every game,″ Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein said. ``We can’t always pick them out and it’s not something we’re usually thinking about. But the players know they’re watching us, taking notes.″

Beuerlein said equipment manager Jackie Miles is often given a list by the league of players in violation of the code.

``They’ll come up with things like, ’This guy’s socks are too high or too low, or so-and-so has to get his shirt tucked in,‴ Beuerlein said.

``We literally can be in the middle of talking about a game plan or something, getting all fired up to go out and play, and Jackie will come over and tell us that we’d better pull our socks up or something like that.″
