Prayers from Maria sunflower field is blooming, and open for photos

AVON, Ohio -- Maria’s Field of Hope, a sunflower field planted to honor children battling cancer, bloomed early this year.

The Prayers from Maria foundation announced that the field of yellow blooms has blossomed a month early. The field draws crowds every September to the lot along I-90 in Avon.

You can take pictures, get a free packet of sunflower seeds to plant and write a loved one’s name on a prayer card, which you can place on a flower.

Prayers from Maria was created to research children’s brain cancer after 7-year-old Maria McNamara died of intrinsic pontine glioma, an rare, aggressive brain tumor. The illness is normally fatal within 14 months.

The field was planted in 2014 on the corner of Jaycox and Chester roads. The field is now open for guests to walk through the acres of sunflowers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Because of development in Avon, this may be the last year the sunflowers bloom in this location.

More information about the field and the foundation is available at the Prayers from Maria website.
