A 31-year-old Portage man faces multiple charges related to drugs and animal neglect following a months-long investigation into heroin and methamphetamine sales, according to a press release from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office searched a residence Wednesday in the 200 block of West Howard Street in Portage.

As a result, Eric Scheriger was arrested and has been referred to the District Attorney’s Office for five counts of delivering heroin, maintaining a drug trafficking place, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of probation and neglecting animals.

During the search, investigators found a large quantity of drug paraphernalia and packing material related to the use and sale of heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine, according to the release. The sheriff’s office also said the residence was unsuitable for habitation and four canines, a cat and a snake were removed.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Portage Police Department, Divine Savior EMS and the Columbia County Humane Society.
